Before I started watching and enjoying baseball, I used to think it was just a bunch of stupid and overgrown men playing a kid’s game and getting paid millions of dollars to do it. And while I will never agree with the absurd salaries all of the players are getting, my view on the game was changed thanks to Chase Utley.
I remember walking into my house one Sunday afternoon and hearing the voice of the great Harry Kalas. Although I had gone out of my way to avoid baseball, I didn’t live under a rock and I knew what my dad was watching. As I passed by the TV, I happened to glance at the screen.
And that’s when I saw him.
Okay, to be perfectly fair and honest, I only stopped to watch because he was the best looking guy I had ever seen in my entire life. But Chase hit a double and I stayed around to watch this good looking guy play for the rest of the game.
That’s when I realized that there are some very special guys in the sport of baseball. Some of them could care less about the money and they just want to play the game. They’re passionate and driven and work harder than anyone else. That’s what I saw in Chase Utley and that’s when I realized how amazing baseball could be.
How I became a Red Sox fan is another story entirely, but I just wanted to thank Chase Utley for drawing me in to begin with. It’s because of players like him that make baseball worthwhile. I’ve been anticipating his return for as long as any Phillies fan and good baseball fan and I will not miss tomorrow night’s game for anything.

Chase Utley and Dustin Pedroia are my two favorite baseball players. You know why? Because no one, no one, works harder than those two men. I respect them more than anyone else in baseball. They give everything they have every single day and if you don’t like them than I have no idea what your problem is. How in the world could anyone give up on Chase Utley after witnessing all the years of hard work that he’s put in? It honestly makes me sick.
